About me

I'm Melissa and I'm a Web Developer,
UX Designer

Enthusiastic and a passion to learn new things while always up for a challenge! I am an ER nurse turned UX Designer and Web Developer. I discovered Lambda School's UX Design program while stuck in bed, nursing a broken leg. I loved that UX Design encompassed some of the same aspects of nursing: empathy, psychology, and research. But, it wasn't enough for me. I wanted to learn to code so I could be a true unicorn and a have a complete understanding of the projects I work on! My goal is to pleasantly shock users and stakeholders in every area of design and development.

My services

UX Research

One of my greatest passions is User Experience Research, which is a critical aspect of the design process. Whether is is competitive analysis, contextual inquiry, usability testing, surveys, interviews, behavioral observation, and the many other tools...I make sure to have a firm grasp on understanding our users and our competition so that our product exceeds expectations.

UX Design

I design based on our users needs and desires. Assessability of the design is extremely important to our vast array of users. The design must be meaningful and relavent to the user. Solid research is necessary to create the design that best enhances the user experience. Some of the tools I use for design are Figma, "Crazy 8's", paper prototyping, wireframing, and prototyping.

Web Development

See the many projects I have on Github. Although I am Full Stack, I passionately specialize in front-end development. I have collaborated remotely with:
- 6 web students for a project called Water My Plants where I designed and created the landing page, about page, and signin/signup forms for a functional website.
- 3 web students to create a website called Use My Tech Stuff, where I created the cards to the tech rentals using React/Redux.
- 3 web developers where I created the back-end using NodeJS for a website called How To.
I am currently collaborating remotely with:
- 13 web developers to create a start up company where I am the UX Designer and developer.
- a team of 10 web developers and data scientists to build a website for a homeless shelter called Family Promise. In this project, I am the UX Designer and front-end web developer.
Because of these many collaborations, I have experience with and feel comfortable with fixing merge conflicts.

Web Design

I use my UX Design skills for Web Design, including typography, color theory, and assessability. I am competent in CSS, Flexbox, Grids, and JavaScript, as well.

My job is to minimize obstacles among a team of developers, therefore making the team more effective. I follow the Scrum framework for agile development.

Freelancer

Including the above, I am also available for logo design and website maintenance.

My skills

My experience

I was a UX Design student at Lambda School for seven months before I transferred to the Full Stack Web Development program, which I am near completing. When in UX Design, I gained experience in competitive research, design, user testing, personas, user flow charts, and much more. I also built a project from scratch up to the web development stage.
In Web Development, I was part of several website teams where I built landing/about pages, signin/signup forms, a database, and backend using Node. Currently, I am working on an outside project with a team for a potential start-up where I am a UX Designer and Web Developer.
